What a wonderful way to start off the Association of Progressive Obstetricians and
Gynaecologists, Kenya (APOG-K) webinar series! The Association hosted its first
webinar on Tuesday 12 th November 2024, with the much awaited conversation;
introduction of APOG-K.
The two-hour webinar, moderated by Dr. Victor Tetty, had presentations from the
Interim Chair of the Association, Dr. Ronald Moemi, alongside Dr. Nelly Bosire. The
attendance was impressive, with 78 obstetricians and gynaecologists from across the
country and beyond our borders, joining in to learn about the Association, its vision and
goals, not just for the members, but also for the adolescents, women and men that are
served by these specialist doctors.
Dr. Ronald Moemi introduced the Association and its interim officials; himself as the
Chair, Dr. Fredrick Kairithia as the Secretary, and Dr. Sarah Agunda as the Treasurer.
He then took the attendees through the Association’s vision, mission, core values and
objectives.
Dr. Bosire delved into the Association’s legal standing, noting that it was duly registered
by the Registrar of Societies on 6 th of September 2024. She further took the attendees
through the Association’s governance structure, noting that the current office holders
were all in interim capacity, awaiting a properly constituted electoral process to fill the
vacancies.
She highlighted the Association’s focus on a more inclusive leadership, through an
executive office, oversighting functional management committees, and standing
committees. She reiterated the important role of technical working groups, in setting the
standard of practice in reproductive health in Kenya, through generation of evidence-
informed practice guidelines, and spearheading of National Policies in partnership with
the Ministry of Health.
The presentation highlighted membership eligibility, registration processes and annual
membership fees. In addition, the association’s work plan was detailed, with emphasis
on member welfare; centering on member benefits of the association, member support
with regard to physical, mental, financial and social well-being; mentorship and
professional ethics support.
The Association’s commitment to community involvement was outlines, with a focus on
community service, community education and meaningful engagement for improved
reproductive health outcomes for all.
Finally, the presentation addressed the Association’s commitment to advocating for the
well-being of its members, for the clients served by the profession, and for the
advancement of the profession through learning and skills development for quality care.
The commitment to research and evidence generation was demonstrated by the
commitment to empower its members to lead in this area.
The session came to an end after a fruitful engagement with the attendees,
acknowledging the comments and addressing the questions raised. The moderator
called the session to a close, after a call to all to join APOG-K, a home for all those who
seek to grow the profession to the towering giant it should be!
